Subject:Chinese? Japanese? Tea or coffee pot?
Posted By: Gaynor Tue, Aug 30, 2016 IP: 92.237.53.152

Hello
Found this approx 190mm tall pot in my grandfathers effects and would really love to know a bit about it.
As you can tell from the title I haven't got a clue !
Thanks in advance - Gaynor

Hi,

The mark is saying: Qianlong Nian Zhi = Made in the Qianlong (Period) ==> 乾隆年製.
The Qianlong Period was from 1736 till 1795, but this mark is by far not from that period. Probably mid 20th century vase. Perhaps one of the Chinese experts of this forum can tell you more.
Or look at this site: http://gotheborg.com/marks/20thcenturychina.shtml
Regards,
Martin.

Hi Martin
Many thanks for taking the time to reply - people on this forum seem both knowledgeable and helpful.
At least I now know that it is chinese and so probably is a teapot !
The quality of the painting fooled me into thinking it was older than a 20th century copy, but it is still a beautifully made thing.
Thanks for the link - I shall plough through and find out what I can.
Best wishes
Gaynor x
