Subject:Blue and White Pottery Jar with Lion Knob
Posted By: Leona Sun, Sep 04, 2016 IP: 199.59.106.195

Hi. I was wondering if this is Chinese or Japanese and how old it might be? It is quite large (about 24" high). Thank you!

In the absence of any other takers so far, I'm going to make a stab and say that this jar must've been produced at the kiln on a really bad day,--and weren't they all?--during the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution. This view is influenced to an extent by its chalky-looking glaze, the presence of a lion dog finial wearing what looks like minstrel show makeup, and the perceived lack of any coherence in the Chinese traditional sense to its decoration or iconography. The only excuse for such a pastiche is the possibility, perhaps a distinct one, that the jar was made somewhere in Asia besides China. Indonesia has been among the usual suspects in recent years.

Best regards,

Bill H.
