Subject:Help Identify Silk Embroidered Box w/ Calligraphy
Posted By: Thomas Sun, Sep 04, 2016 IP: 71.92.244.13

Hello and thank you ahead of time. A recent impulse buy at a California antique shop because the price was so right. It is a wooden box with an open top, similar to a planter, covered in green silk on the outside with a circular embroidery picture on each side (butterflies on two, flowers on the other two). The inside is covered with a brown paper material with calligraphy characters. Any help identifying its purpose and era is appreciated.

Dimensions would affect what the box could be used for.

The paper is just a functional liner for a somewhat rough surface.

My guess is that we will not know what past owner(s) used it for.

Hello,
It is roughly 6 inches in height and 7 by 7 inches across the top of the box.
Regards
