Subject:IRON? SNAKE 23+" LONG - ASIAN? - HELP, PLEASE

This 23 3/4" snake, seems to be made of iron, and also seems to be extremely old. The patina is very rich.
The sides of the snake look as though there is lettering of some sort. The scales of the snake are very articulated.
Is this unusual piece of art made to be appreciated as art, or did it represent some religious meaning.
Do you think that it came from Asia?
