Subject:Kutani Aochibu Meiji/Taisho Era 35 pieces
Posted By: Philip Slagter Sun, Sep 11, 2016 IP: 108.174.120.115

My Great Grandfather, Arthur John Slagter, worked with Royal Dutch Shell about 1908 in Japan. He brought this Katani Aochibu porcelain set home with him when he returned to the United States. They have been in my family for about 100 years.
They are in perfect condition, no chips, scratches or cracks with the exception of one of the large covered bowls where the top was cracked in half and someone glued it back together. (see photos) I have no idea when.

There are 35 pieces in all. Please see photos.

I believe them to be late Meiji or early Taisho period as some of the pieces are marked with "Great Japan" in Japanese. They were made for my family as you can see my grandfathers initials on the bottoms of the plates and teapot.

One of the covered teacups has something written inside it. I cannot translate that but believe it to either be a poem or something about my family and their position with Royal Dutch Shell.

I am interested in selling them all and was wondering if this is something someone might want.

If possible could someone give me a little information such as which studio they were made in and the date and also an approximate value and maybe what the writing is inside one of the covered teacups.

If anyone has any info could you please contact me at [email protected]

Thank you for your time and consideration,

Hi Philip,

The only thing i can help you with is the signature shown at photo 3.
It says: Kutani 九谷 (from right to left) Bunzan 文山, which is probably the studio or artist.
Regards,
Martin Michels.

Thank you Martin. Would you have any idea how I can go about selling this set. It seems very difficult to find its value as I don't see a lot of information about this area, Aochibu.

Hi Philip,

Best way is to sell the whole lot at an auction or perhaps an online auction like Catawiki or Ebay.
Although it's a great looking set, you maybe need to split it up in smaller lots to get as much as possible. There are collectors out there.
Regards,
Martin MIchels

Hi Martin,

Thank you for the info. I would like to keep it intact if possible because I think the providence should be kept intact as well.
Cheers,
Philip

I just learned something more about the poem inside the covered teacup. The poem is signed by "Seizan" who was the first artist to master "Saiji" (micro calligraphy) and was just mastering his technique at the same time my great grandfather was in Japan. Here are some photos of the poem. If anyone can read the title of the poem I would greatly appreciate it.
