Subject:Thai Si Satchanalai Kilns Pottery
Posted By: Robin Scott Sun, Sep 25, 2016 IP: 107.3.165.84

I have some pottery that I believe is from Thailand and created in the Si Satchanalai Kilns between the 13th and 16th centuries.

I'd like to confirm that is correct and see what else anyone can tell me about the four pieces that I have, such as if a more exact date might be apparent for these pieces.

I also wonder if the smallest piece is also from this period or not since it is a bit different.

I believe these pieces were recovered from shipwrecks in the ocean and thus spent a long time underwater.

Any information about how I could learn more, such as how to contact a person who is an expert or find a site dedicated to this type of pottery would be appreciated.

After perusing the following thread (link), I tend to believe your jar may be on the newer side:

Hi Robin,

Could you please post photos of the bases your boxes and of the inside of both the base and lid.

Do the lids fit securely in any rotation or do they rock when rotated out of position?

Judging from the photos that you have posted, all four boxes are 14-16th century Sawankhalok and a very nice selection at that, but the additional photos are necessary to confirm..

Best Regards, Walter

Hello Walter,

I will have updated photos for you as soon as I can get them done.
Thank you
All lids fit well the small pot with what looks like carrots on the lid has some wear but the lid fits and you can see where it is suppose to line up along the base.

As requested, here are links to photos of each piece again but this time including the insides, under lid, and bottom of each piece.

BTW, what is the best way to remove the yellow masking tape that is on the smallest piece as shown in one photo.

Hi Robin,

Thanks for the additional photos.I have no doubt that your boxes are original. These boxes were made in very large numbers and exported throughout SE Asia where many are being found at grave sites and shipwrecks . I think that yours are from burials. Many also found their way to Japan where they were favored for the tea ceremony. I have seen hundreds - no two the same.

All original. I bought a similar one in Mellacca Malaysia. From Shipwreck. Nice pieces.
