Subject:QI BAISHI FROGS AND TADPOLES PAINTING
Posted By: carlos Thu, Sep 29, 2016 IP: 58.182.236.113

Would anyone happen to know if there is a database available for Qi Baishi's works (as in a compendium or book online or print). I am trying to validate a painting entitled Frogs and Tadpoles 1953 with a gallery mark on the back. The only image available online is in black and white. The painting I am looking into is in full color and appears to be genuine. I have not analyzed the pixels under a microscope or lens to determine if it is a print. I essentially would like to know if this is a known piece housed in a museum or collection. Hours of internet research have provided nothing. Thank you very much for your assistance and time.

Master Qi created a number of paintings of frogs and tadpoles. These were one of his favourite quick subjects.

The size and proportion of the painting make me think it is one of the large series of woodblock prints created from Qi paintings by the Beijing art store and publisher, Rong Bao Zhai 榮寶齋. If that is the name of the gallery you mentioned than this is almost certainly a print. By the way, don't look for pixels, woodblock prints don't produce them.

If the painting is not mounted, you can examine the reverse side. A painting will have ink that has penetrated the paper completely, whereas a print will usually have less penetration, but even this is not an absolutely certain method of authentication - you need an expert.

I have Rong Bao Zhai prints which have fooled even people experienced in art.

Thank you for the information and your assistance. Especially with the ink leak through the back. Funnily enough, Rong Bao Zhai never made a print of this particular piece. I've gone through thousands of photos of the prints they made don't match this one. Although Master Qi made many variations of the frogs and tadpoles I am hoping that this was one of his originals that was lost between the time he was showing his works in London and the time his works were properly cataloged.
