This was actually converted into a lamp, but I thought it looks really nice. The hardware on the lamp is definitely from around the 30's so I assume its from some time before then. The bottom looks like its got some age so I figure maybe from 1900 or 19th century, but I could be wrong. Porcelain is very heavy. Does the mark on the side have anything indicating age? I figure its probably a poem, but does it say anything else about the maker? Thanks for all the help, I really appreciate it.

The signature line at the left of the inscription (third photo down), says the piece was done by Republic (1912-49) artisan Fan Taihe (Fan Taihe xie - 樊泰和寫). A Google Chinese character search of the signature turned up a number of hits on his porcelain works, a couple of links to which are pasted herewith:

Google and some other search engines also can provide machine translations of these Chinese web pages.

The only thing I saw that mentioned price required a sign-in to view it. Keep in mind, the Chinese yuan or renminbi is not a convertible currency, so its value outside China may be problematic.

Once drilled as a lamp, jars like this lose a significant amount of value, which often isn't all that great to begin with for a similar jar without a drill-hole in it, especially when the maker apparently isn't well known outside of China, as the dearth of Google hits on the transliterated name suggests.

Thanks for taking the time to answer, Bill. I checked those links, and searched google.com.hk but I found it a little hard to find prices on any of the pieces by the artist. In your searches did you find any closed auctions or sales that gave a price point or valuation? I just want to get a ballpark for what this lamp might be worth. Thanks for any help.
