Subject:Requesting Help Identifying Sake Cups-Chinese or Japanese?
Posted By: Mike Sun, Oct 23, 2016 IP: 209.197.44.2 Hello. Hoping I could get some help identifying the origin and age of two sake cups. Looking at the bottom, I believe they are pottery instead of porcelain. Each are about 2.25 inches wide and 1 inch tall. There are traces of gold paint on the rims--it looks like most has been worn away. Thanks for any information! |

Posted By: Mike Wed, Oct 26, 2016 Thanks for the responses, Martin and Ernest. I emailed Marmie at modernjapanesepotterymarks.blogspot.com. What she told me confirms your responses. She said the mark did read Gyouzan (曉山), and the pottery is called Kyo-Satsuma (Satsuma made/decorated in Kyoto). Wikipedia says the Gyouzan (or Gyozan) kiln was active during the Meiji period (1868-1912). Thanks again! |
