Posted By: Bill H Mon, Nov 07, 2016 What it means is problematical without knowing whether it is Chinese, Japanese or Korean, which is indeterminable without clues that may be available in a complete view of the object, be it scroll, plaque, dish, tile or tattoo. In Chinese Mandarin, the two characters would read down as "Bright Jade" (guang yu), possibly a given name or reference (possibly metaphorical) to something in the subject matter. |

Posted By: Guy Sat, Nov 12, 2016 Japanese Meiji era okimono of a fisherman struggling with an eel (here as a representation of a kappa or water kami?), most probably carved in ivory and signed 'Kôgyoku' (光玉). Kôgyoku was a well known Meiji ivory carver. |
