Subject:Need help with multi-compartment inlaid box
Posted By: lori Tue, Nov 15, 2016 IP: 173.63.34.46

Interesting multi-compartmented wood box with inlays.

It measures about 15 inches wide by ten and one-quarter inches wide by six inches high.

The top (outer) appears to have been a burl wood veneer which has long ago dried out.
The top (inner) is nicely inlaid with what appears to be ivory or bone and different types of wood.
There is an inlay of an elephant in the center.

The interior of the box consists of a lift-out tray with many compartments having inlaid lids, some with what may be "pique" or inlaid strips of a silver colored metal (akin to the cloissone wires).

Once you lift the tray, there are several more lidded compartments with what looks like a holder for writing instruments.

I am not sure of the country of origin and am looking for some help.

I thank you all in advance for looking and helping.
