Subject:Help with Sign Translation
Posted By: Mike M Sat, Nov 26, 2016 IP: 69.120.43.251

These appear to be very old wood signs. Someone made a comment that they could be old wood street signs. Can anyone help with the translation? I'm not even sure I have them correctly facing up.

Thank you.

I am not sure anybody can translate them for you 100% correct because something is amiss in both signs. They are apparently not a pair, but rather each one is one of two pairs. Unfortunately, the one at the left with only six characters and it should contain 7. The one at the right is upside down and the first two characters are simply weird, especially the first one which was not recognizable as any Chinese characters I know. May be if you would be kind enough to provide me with some background info regarding where, when and how you obtained them and any stories behind them I may be able to find out more about them.

The characters for the left one appear to be:

清風 明月西同(間?)

and the one at the right:

? ? 何須大

normally should be used as 室雅何須大 but the first two characters look nothing like 室雅

In short, these two signs are truly puzzling.

Dear Super,

Could the first character of the second, upside-down sign be 鶴 - 'the crane', and thus 'longevity'?

Does that start to make any sense to you?

Regards

Mikeoz

Hi, Mikeoz:

No, it would not make any sense if the first character is 鶴

Super
