I bought this recently and don't know if it is old or modern. The shop was just a junk store and they did not advertise it as Chinese. It was under 100 dollars.

Does anyone know what this would be called, a bowl, platter, dish etc? It is 13 1/2" long and 3 1/2" high. Not quite a platter as it is too deep.

It is nearly impossible to definitively say what the plate represents without handling the object. That said, there are some things pro and con for this being a period piece. The original was made as a royal presentation set at the court of Louis XV. It was made with the precision and finesse worthy of a monarch of the 18th century. To see the detail put into that set, see Bonhams sale catalogue for 20 June 2006. There is on page 83 a photo of of a huge (47.5 cm.) charger with excellent photographic detail. The difference between your plate and that one in crispness and sharp enamel work is telling. Other reports of that service do not describe a serving platter such as seen here. Saying all that, the brush work and general color match is good. The design is in less detail, but is acceptable. In conclusion, it appears your platter was made to add to the original service, but at a later date. I would send photos to a major auction house, or better yet, get a hands on opinion as to authenticity.
