Subject:Asian fan
Posted By: Jim N Fri, Dec 09, 2016 IP: 2602:0306:bd69:7650:

HI,

I am hoping that someone is able to help me with some information on this fan. Is it Japanese or Chinese. Any ideas about the artist or the era it was painted? All I know is that I like it and that it was purchased in Kyoto in 1955.

Thanks much, Jim

Japanese, dated 1920, supposedly by Tomioka Tessai. Most likely to be a printed reproduction given his fame.

Hi Rat,

Thanks for the info. I thought it could be by Tessai based on style, but really didn't know. I believe its an original painting, but I guess it could be someone copying his work. I got this fan from my father. His notes also said that he had a couple of hanging scrolls by Tessai also purchased in Kyoto in 1955. Not sure which ones they are or if he gave them as gifts long ago.

When I have time after Christmas, I'll try to post some photos of the scrolls that maybe Tesssai.

Thanks again, Jim

You may be correct, I don't know Tessai's works well enough to judge
