Subject:Antique Blue & White Jar
Posted By: Brett Fri, Dec 09, 2016 IP: 24.47.109.17

Not sure if this is oriental design. Looks to me to be 19th century or earlier. I was thinking possible Puebla or Talavera/Spain but I wasn't sure. Most of the designs I see on Asian pieces are more intricate and this has a folksy feel but I am definitely no expert on pieces such as these. Any ideas? Thanks for looking, I always appreciate the help.

In my opinion, this piece probably is fairly new, possibly decorated somewhere in Asia besides China and purposely dirtied up in an effort to make it look older. The motif shows a traditional Chinese scene of egrets and ducks in a lotus marsh, but the painting style itself is anything but what is seen on antique Chinese porcelains, looking almost like it was done with a felt-tip pen. Here are some late Qing dishes in the lotus marsh pattern for comparison. First a famille rose bowl of the Daoguang period (1821-50, and then two rice grain pieces of the Guangxu reign (1875-1908).

Best regards,

Bill H.
