Subject:exquisite 18 5/8" h rosewwod warrior statue
Posted By: david Sun, Jan 22, 2017 IP: 2607:fea8:1d5f:fe45:

Hello, Can anyone tell me how old this large 18 5/8" high exquisitely carved solid rosewood warrior statue may be? NOTE: Notice the detailing of the face, dragon, footwear and sword! Also; the statue is not marked, from what I could see; any idea as to where it might have been carved and for whom? Any assistance with this query would be greatly appreciated! Thank you! David.

Just a guess, but your statue could represent Lu Dongbin, one of China's Daoist "Eight Immortals", who often is shown dressed in the manner of a scholar and carrying a sword (See link). The figure looks like he originally might have carried something in his right hand, which item might have pointed to some other identity.

As to age, this figure looks to have somewhat less than the amount of cracking I associate with similar carvings of Chinese myths & legends that were made in places like China, Hong Kong and Taiwan in the years immediately following World War II and which frequently had bleached bone inserts for their eyes and teeth. Makes me speculate that your statue might be of the post-1975 era, when China was rediscovering these traditional carvings as a means to reap foreign exchange from their export.

Best regards,

Bill H.

Dear Bill H,

Could this be Guan Yu 關羽?. I have a ceramic statuette with a very similar face, stance and attitude. And he's quite a common household or shop guardian god.

Greetings Mike Oz,

I'm with you and Willows. Presuming the Halberd is what's missing from the figure's hand, Guan Yu would indeed be prime among suspects.

Cheers,

Bill H.

My guess would be Guan Yu. His right hand would have clutched his iconic halberd.
