Some, such as I, may be waiting to see more images in hopes of getting some idea as to whether this is written by a Chinese, Japanese or Korean. Otherwise, nobody will know how to translate or transliterate it it correctly.

I'm assisting Mr Burns with these additional images of what appears to be a case for a painting or scroll. I'm uncertain as to whether I've read all of the characters correctly, but starting with the right-hand image and reading down and across to the left, the gilt stacks look to be:

乾隆大閱圖, Qianlong Da Yue Tu

仿郎世寧, Fang Lang Shining

世練堂作, Shi Lian Tang Zuo

戳任辛巳仲秋月 Chuo Ren Xin Si Zhong Qiu Yue

Essentially, this seems to read "The Qianlong Emperors' Grand Inspection; In imitation of Lang Shining; Made for the Hall of 'World Practice'; Stamped officially in the second month of autumn during the Yinsi year"

I welcome corrections, as usual.

Best regards,

Bill H.

Hello Bill,

Thank you very much for this translation.

Do you know what Yunsi year can be in the equivalent of the Gregorian calendar ?

Does anyone know of a Hall of World Practice or pavilion within the summer palace or the forbidden city?

Literary reference or old map .

Thank You

The Xinsi year last came along in 2001 and at 60 year intervals beforehand; i.e., 1941, 1881, 1821, 1761 and so forth. However, since the inscription refers to a copy of something painted by Lang Shining, an artist who has been copied for more than two centuries, there's no reason to believe this item of yours is very old. Also, I'm not certain that my reading of the hall name is correct in this instance. It would be best if a native scholar comments on this point.

Best regards,

Bill H.

The original by Castiglione can be seen here:

Nice work Bill H. I'm not 100% convinced of what the hall name is supposed to be or even that 堂 is the final character, plausible though it is. 世 is also a surname, so this could be the copyist's name instead. The second character seems to be 綵 (=彩). But that doesn't answer the question exactly either....

Rat, much obliged for you watching my back. A Google character search of 世綵堂 (Shi Cai Tang - Hall of brilliant Generations?) turns out to be the name of the ancestral hall of fame of the Liao clan (廖氏 - Liao shi) in Guangdong and Fujian provinces. If I understand the story I pieced together from Google, this name is something the Liaos earned through imperial honors granted to famous ancestors. I did some spot checks and didn't see anything clearly indicating use as a person's name, though the hall name turned up in what apparently were some brand names.

Thanks much,

Bill H.

Hello ,

The case: lid and base are filled with sinogram inside this may help.

I am sending you this by email Bill .Because it is very difficult to take pictures correctly.

The format of the images is limited on the forum

Mr Burns,

Before I returned those recent photos to you, I reduced their size to fit the forum's image limit of less than 100 kb each. Business interests constitute a personal priority which usually restricts my participation here to commentaries and uncomplicated translations. I lack the time to serve as a surrogate technician for anyone, and can only encourage reading and re-reading the forum instructions for uploading photos along with your queries. There also are a number of web services that facilitate the uploading of photos to sites accessible by easy-to-use URL links.

Best regards,

Bill H.

I would like to thank once again the long research work done by Bill on a voluntary basis.

But I didn't see who to contact because most sales rooms don't speak Chinese or don't use expert.

I already have an idea of what it might be or what it is trying to imitate.

Knowing that I have never seen anything resembling this case.

Thanks again Bill and the others.
