Subject:Chinese vase and mark
Posted By: Martin Michels Mon, Feb 06, 2017 IP: 84.26.216.123

I've found this Chinese vase - 48 cm high - on a garage sale. Costed only a few euro's. But I can't make anything out of the signature or how old it is. Might be new even.
Someone any idea?
Thanks in advance.
Martin.

This appears to be a late 20th century product of the Hong Kong or Macao transfer-decorated porcelain industry. The mark, as shown in your image, has at its left an upside-down stack of two characters that read down when flipped 180 degrees and then horizontally as 'Yi Li' (意利 - 'Wish for Profit'). Again as shown, the right stack has a well-formed 'Zao' (造 - 'Made By') at its bottom, but overhead is a malformed 'Zao' that needs to be flipped 90 degrees to the left and then 180 degrees to attain its proper reading position. In other words the mark is a mess, and the vase itself is a decorative piece with little value in the antiques market.

Best regards,

Bill H.

Bill,

Thanks again for your help, it's much appreciated.
You confirmed what I thought, late 20e C.
Anyway, I now know what the mark says and you're right, it's a mess.
Regards,
Martin.
