Subject:Cloisonne Snuff Bottle - Beadiste Please Help!
Posted By: Mat Wed, Feb 08, 2017 IP: 195.251.104.62

I try to figure out when this small (6.3 cm) snuff bottle was made. I think it is 20th c, but when in that century? Thank you very much in advance!
Mat

Hi
It is a nice looking scent bottle. Possibly 20th century, but would be early 20th century. Pity photos aren't too clear
Kind regards

Hi Mat, sorry about the delay in replying, I've been away from the Forum.

It's a very pretty and nicely made bottle. However, I cannot convince myself that it's pre-Liberation. There seem to be a great many of these bottles featuring some sort of framed animal motif with leafy scrollwork - the style of the frames, the leaves, and just the overall look seems late 20th century.

The only bottle I've seen that I know for certain is pre-Liberation, likely Qing, is in the Seattle Art Museum. The style of cloisonne is completely different.

However, that's just what I think, and of course I am not an expert.

Some other examples from my picture files make me think these were produced when Mao was alive. I can email you the photos.

I like the piece and although it is difficult to ascertain from those photos, I don't think that it is modern. Let me know if you ever consider parting with it, please
Kind regards
John
