Subject:Re: netsuke identification and signature

This is a quite well executed monkey carving, having a mark that bears resemblance to a signature used by Masatsugu (Kaigyokusai Masatsugu - 1813–1892). Perhaps one of our Japanese contributors can verify my speculation.
Standard characters for this surname and mark are 正次. I couldn't find an online illustration of a vetted signature from a museum collection, so am providing photos from an unvetted okimono in my collection. This Hotei (Maitreya manifestation) looks to be carved either of walrus ivory or tagua nut.
Best regards,
Bill H.
