Posted By: Faith Sat, Feb 11, 2017 IP: 222.152.147.20

Hi there,
Can anyone please help with any information about my heavy, large clay plate.
It measures 18" in diameter.
Thanks kindly
Faith

Your plate or plaque would appear to be Japanese, and to show a scene of the Demon Queller Shoki in a confrontation with one of his quarry. The mark may be one of those meant to be the maker's personal emblem and not written as a standard character. One of the Japanese experts might be able to contribute more authoritative comments. Here's the only remotely similar Japanese plate or plaque I could coax out of liveauctioneers.com (link).

Best regards,

Bill H.

The other protagonist is Raijin or Raiden, the Shinto god of storm, thunder and lightning.

Sorry, I had a better look. Shoki is confronting a demon or oni, not Raiden.

Hi Faith
This may be a form of Japanese Tokoname ware especially if the images and background are painted on the clay and not glazed. Not sure about the mark. Good luck, Yurike.
