Subject:Need help identifying Figurine
Posted By: Gary Gustafosn Wed, Feb 15, 2017 IP: 74.69.82.123

Hi,

Any help identifying this object would be greatly appreciated. I have been told it may be a Head Rest, but I've never seen one with holes in the back.

Thank you,
Gary

This item possibly is inspired by a Chinese "pillow", though this one seems to be configured to accommodate flower arranging if not for use as a joss stick holder. Whatever it might be used for, it is purely decorative. The Maitland Smith company, based in High Point, North Carolina, USA, is a maker of and dealer in furniture and custom-designed decorative accessories like this.

Here are some late 20th century Dehua elephants with the Maitland Smith tag. These came up in an estate sale for $50 and later sold in a mall for about $150.

Best regards,

Bill H.
