Subject:Help to identify these vases
Posted By: Marilyn Thu, Feb 16, 2017 IP: 217.155.200.52

Hi,I was left these vases after the recent death of my mother. I know they have been in the family for over 50 years but I can find no referrence to them anywhere. There is some damage to them both which happened before I was born but all I know is that they were a gift to my granny. Each vase has two of those fighting characters on them, one on each side and the last photo shows the marks on the bottom of each one.
Thanks in advance for any help.

They are Satsuma earthenware from Japan.

Hi, thanks for your reply, yes I have been told they are early Satsuma but that's all. Have you any idea how old they are and if infact they are actually vases and not urns or insense burners, and are the markings on the bottom the signiture of the artist thank you.

HI,

Indeed Satsuma earthenware, probably first half of the 20th century. Marked with numbers 11 en 12 = 十一 and 十二.
Regards,
Martin.
