Subject:Need help Identifying this rubbing? woodblock print?
Posted By: BRaff Thu, Feb 16, 2017 IP: 73.93.141.134

can someone tell me anything about this piece of art it is about 5' in length and 2 1/2' in height. It looks like a rubbing or a wood block print. it is on a very fine hand made paper of some kind possibly rice paper. Also included are two chops a translation of each would be amazing. I bought this piece at a garage sail in san francisco about 10 years ago.

It looks like a rubbing of a bas-relief panel, probably on a tomb or sarcophagus.

I think the large seal refers to a collection of objects from Six Villages. I'll look again later.

Well first off thank you for the response. I have been trying to find out about this piece through periodic research for 10 years with no success on my own. Any info no matter how insignificant is greatly appreciated. Things like what is it depicting who are the characters. Its chinese right? I'm a novice when it comes to asian art research/mythology. what kind of chops are those? again I super appreciate you/anyone taking time out of your day to respond.

first off thank you for responding again( i remember you from last time), you are literally the only person who has ever actually given me something to go on. can you tell me anything about the “six villages treasure collection”. Is that what the square chop says? Is there anything else you can tell me about where I could research the six villages treasure collection. A general search on google turns up nothing for me in the first few pages. Anything else you could tell me no matter what would be of great help. A geographic region? Is it taoist? what is the time frame in turns of production for both the piece and the coffin lid. I really appreciate your help so far just trying to get farther down the path.

It's Chinese, but quite modern I think, the sort of thing one might find on hotel room walls starting in the late 1980s and into the 1990s. Am not sure of the large seal that mikeoz is reading, but the other one does seem Daoist in a way, it basically means "dumb speech, dumb language", which one might associate with a Daoist criticism of trying to express/describe reality in words.
