Subject:Please help identify these marks?
Posted By: Anthony Fri, Feb 24, 2017 IP: 86.180.183.70

I have been trying to find out what these marks mean in the lid of this pot that I bought recently. Does anyone have any idea?

Many thanks

The mark reads "Jixing Diantong" or "Jixing Pewter". From a Google search of these characters I found an index hit from chinabogu.com, stating that the mark belonged to a pewter workshop of China's late Qing and Republic era. From other snippets that turned up it appears the original shop making tea wares with this mark may have been located on Huai'an Street (Huai'an Jie - 懷安街) in Shantou Municipality, Guangdong Province, and operated in late Qing and early Republic times by Yan Jixing (顏吉興). The link below leads to several fuzzy pictures of what looks to be an old pewter tea caddy with the same mark. Your covered box looks quite pristine and without appreciable wear by comparison. My guess is that it may be a newer product that has borrowed the trusted old mark, although the box still is a respectable example of Chinese pewter-making art.

Best regards,

Bill H.
