Subject:Identification of signed bronze Buddha statue
Posted By: Art Fri, Feb 24, 2017 IP: 47.17.17.26

I was wondering if anyone could help identify this bronze Buddha statue. I am interested in finding out which Buddha this is, what the inscription on the back says and the origin of this statue.

Also, if anyone could help with if it looks to be a modern reproduction or an antique.

Thank you very much,
Art

Hi, the mark is Qianlong, I have no idea if this is of the Qianlong period or is a later piece as this mark is still used today on pieces.

This image shares some good detailing in common with other Chinese bronzes I've seen that date back at least to the Ming dynasty, including the workmanship of its eyes, chignon, raiments and ornamentation, as well as its superb symmetry. I can believe it may be Qianlong-period, but it needs hands-on examination by someone with the experience to make any such determination. The serene expression suggests the image may represent Avalokitesvara in that Bodhisattva's manifestation as Guanyin the Goddess of Mercy.

Best regards,

Bill H.
