Subject:Red seal on a Hokusai print
Posted By: Roland Six Wed, Mar 08, 2017 IP: 2a02:a03f:0469:a900:

I'm trying to understand the meaning of a red seal on a vintage Hokusai print ( 36 views of Mt Fuji, Yoshida, No 29 in Richard Lane ).
Can somebody help me ? Thank you very much.

IMO, the printed commercial mark reads 百版, 'Hyakuban' and could refer to an early 20th century publisher who issued reprints/facsimile of famous Hokusai prints. Eventually, it could also be the name of a retailer selling Hokusai reprints at that time.

Guy.

the red seal means reproduction, avoiding to not
original one.
