Subject:Thai Painting?
Posted By: BL Wed, Mar 22, 2017 IP: 2603:3020:0005:9d00:

I'd appreciate any information concerning when and where this painting was done and also, if in fact there is text on the back side, what does it mean. Thanks.

I understand your concern about accessing an unknown link. I've done it this way because the quality of the images is better. I hope the images below are ok.

Not Thai, which I can read, but close. It's Cambodian (Khmer), but something seems odd. Is your photo flipped horizontally? The script looks backwards to me. Either that or it is some Khmer variant or older style. In any case I can't read it. It appears to be old, but hard for me to say how old, since paper ages fast in that climate.

The theme of the painting is straight from Theravada Buddhism, which is shared by Burma, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, and Sri Lanka. And the message is clear: Be good, don't be bad.

Hope this helps a little.

Thanks for the information. I don't read the language so I assumed that the back of the painting would be the correct position.

Below are several orientations of the same page if you care to spend some more time. Thanks again.

I think it is definitely a Thai piece of art.
However, the script is not Thai because
the picture is not actually a general painting.
It is part of a Buddhist scripture, telling a
story of a monk named Phra Malai. In the
picture, Phra Malai was visiting one of the hell pits.
Therefore, as a part of a religious book,
what was written was a Pali script, not Thai.

Hello Shell Silom,

Thanks for your detailed information. The person who sold it to me said it was a Thai piece and you have just confirmed it. I still have the piece and still enjoy it. Your explanation makes the experience so much better. Thanks again.
