Subject:PLEASE Help Identify Artist Chen, Ping-Chi
Posted By: David Tuttle Mon, Dec 06, 2010 IP: 76.177.125.19

Hi Folks, I have had this painting for 20 years. It was given to me by a 97 year old Okinawan man who was a friend of mine during my military stay there. He took it off of his wall. I dont know the age and can not find any information on the Artist or the paintings value.

I actually purchased about 5 of his paintings during my husband's tour in Okinawa (1990-1991). He was an older deaf gentleman that knocked on my door one day. Over my 6 month stay, he would visit and I would purchase one of his paintings. I have also been curious about him over the years but have not been able to locate any information on him.

My mother-in-law was a military spouse and lived in Okinawa in the early 90's and purchased a painting from this same man. It's a beautiful canvas painting that we now have.

I would also like to know more about this artist. I have several of his paintings, and the work is just very nice.

Hi, I was stationed in Okinawa 1990 - 92 and I also bought 2 paintings off of this gentleman, who was deaf and selling them door to door. I have a painting of an eagle soaring through a valley and another of a lighthouse in the distance seen looking through a cave. I often wondered if these paintings were from some kind of mass market painting from a factory. I could only confirm it if there were several copies of the same picture. I would appreciate if anyone had some more info, especially on value. Thanks

Lived in Iwakuni from 1989-1991.
He came to our door selling his paintings, he was deaf and had no english. We invited him in for dinner. Bought three paintings from him.
1: two old mast boats on the ocean, very good work.
2: a snow covered clearing in the woods with two turkeys.
3: a view of mount fuji during the day from a muddy dirt road surrounded by woods and flowers with light peaking through.

I purchased 4 paintings from him in 1990. One was a painting he did for me of one of our daughters. He was deaf and did not speak but he did know English as I would make hot tea for us and he and I would visit for hours communicating by writing on paper to each other. He told me he had learned English and art in Korea I believe although it might have been China, it has been too long and my memory could be flawed. He said he painted the ropes for the sails in his painting by using a piece of human hair. He was/ is a very nice man. I would love myself to know what has happened to him over these many years. For me his paintings are priceless.
