Posted By: Toan Mon, Jul 24, 2017 IP: 185.49.74.131

Dear forum
I have just bought this brush washer which I have no doubt at all that it's very old
My question is : is it Ming or Qing particularly Yongzheng?
Your opinions would be greatly appreciated

The inscription clearly say that it was done in the Ming "大明年製". I dont know anything about porcelain to tell if it is an original or a XX century copy.

Thank you F.Mina
I have done a lot of research on this brushwasher but have not been able to be conclusive aboout its age.
I do not believe that it is a modern item at all and hoping someone on the forum may be able to advise
Kind regards
Toan

Hi Toan, The Mainland China-published book of marks, "Zhongguo lidaitaoci kuanzhi dadian" (中国历代陶瓷款识大典), 2006 edition, contains a couple of the same marks, as shown on shards from the Ming Wanli period. I believe similar patterns also appeared during the Qing period and sometimes had counterpart pieces in the doucai palette. Porcelains made during several Ming reigns including Wanli also used the mark "Da Ming Nian Zao" (大明年造).

Best regards,

Bill H.

Hi Bill
Thanks for your comment
I believe that this brushwasher is quite old and the reason that I think it is either Ming or Yongzheng is because I only seen this shape in early Qing's Brushwasher and I know that during this period the imitated "HEAP AND PILE EFFECT" was also practiced
Kind regards

Da Ming Nian Zhi is a most unusual mark with no imperial reign. Usually, Xuande and Chenghua are most imitated. If it is not a transfer print (looks like it might be), I would guess Republic or later.

Da Ming Nian Zhi (your mark) and Da Ming Nian Zo marks without the emperor's reign title are not uncommon on Ming wares. Check out J.P. O'brien's thoughts on these marks at www.earlyming.com or google "tai mantis porcelain marks" and click on the various links.

Why do you believe this item is from the Yongzheng reign?

These pictures alone are insufficient to tell for sure whether it is antique or newer. Based on the pictures it can be said that it is not Ming, and not Yongzheng.
This decoration would have been used from the early 19th century. An apocryphal Ming mark does not necessarily mean that an item is fake or new, however. The pictures are just not detailed enough for dating.

Dear Toan

This form of "hollow scrolling" pattern was really popular in the early 19th century and no later. I understand that it also exists from Qianlong onwards, but from the relatively dirty blue I would peg this as early 19th century.

Kind regards
J.Lim
