Subject:18th Century Qianlong Blue Willow Plate
Posted By: Bokaba Sat, Jul 29, 2017 IP: 172.250.142.6 I recently purchased this Blue Willow pattern plate. It appears to be early-mid Qianlong period (perhaps 1750 or so) in an octagonal form. The painting is exceptional for Blue Willow export patterns that I have seen. Any thoughts? |

The willow pattern is more often associated with the less finessed painting seen on "Canton ware" of the later 19th century. In fact, the willow pattern is a very old one. The earliest I can actually document its use in export is a plate made in 1715 for both the domestic and export markets. This one done in iron red, but I guess the more popular blue and white exists in this design from the same period. |
