Subject:Name on cup and saucer
Posted By: Martin Michels Tue, Sep 05, 2017 IP: 84.26.216.123

Hi,

I have this Aka-e cup and saucer (picture1), signed under both items, but I can't decipher the top character on the left. The right side is Mikawachi 三川内. The left side ?? 寿 (Ju?) 造 (Zo or Tsukuru) - Made by ???? See picture 2, which is the signature under the cup.
I've found another same signature on the internet, almost alike, see picture 3.

Does anyone know which is the top left character?
Thanks in advance,
Martin.

It can be read only,
三川内産寿造 Mikawachi-san Kotobuki (Ju) Zo
Kotobuki is supposed be the art name of painter.
With regards,

The right-hand stack in the mark reads down as "Mikawachi", I believe, but the other side with maker information does not compute for me. Others more wise than I may be able to help you on that point.

Mikawachi is where the famous Hirado porcelain has traditionally been made. Here's a link to a trocadero.com dealer with a partial tea set in what looks to be the same pattern.

Best regards,

Bill H.
