Subject:What is this?
Posted By: Ben Thompson Thu, Sep 07, 2017 IP: 173.89.5.199

Can anyone tell me what this was "hat" was used for, and about how long ago? It's very light, with a lot of "hair" usage on it.

Possibly a traditional Japanese rice straw raincoat and broom of the same material. I spent a long time in Southeast Asia and am ashamed to say I gained no particular proficiency in dating straw raincoats, but there seems to be a fair amount of information online, including the following for starters:

Best regards,

Thank you for the information! This hat is extremely intricate, though, compared to what I see there.

I hope this info helps, your post intrigued me. I would provide a link but I had trouble trying to add a link before on this iPad. I believe it is From Papua New Guinea, from Tambanum Village. If you go to Boise weekly.com., there is an article about art exhibit. A photo from the collection of Beth Sellars has an uncanny resemblance to yours. Made of plant fibers, clay, and pigments. The village is in middle Sepic river region. I do hope this helps, as I am quite uncertain in my research ability as of late

Thanks so much for that information! I can see somewhat of a resemblance there, but this is much more intricate.. I'll have to get some better pictures and upload them..
