Subject:Lacquer
Posted By: Cecile Mon, Sep 11, 2017 IP: 23.233.56.237

Hi. I found this bowl box broken at a thrift store. They let me take the pieces to study. Is this a very valuable old piece of lacquerware. Who was it made by and when? Thank you. Such a shame that someone broke it.

The two characters in the seal are 為彥, in Chinese Wei Yan. The object looks Japanese to me, so it would be advisable to research the Japanese pronunciation of these two characters.

Thank you for posting this, I'm glad that you saved it from certain destruction. To my untrained eye, it looks older than 50 years. I know Tashiro Shoten used an elephant mark, but the elephant is facing in opposite direction. Also MTK used an elephant. Hopefully someone will be able to help you with the writing. Put back together it will always have a decorative value and I'm sure it will educate at least a few of us. Best of luck

The seal-script reading of Mikeoz is correct
(為彦)but in this case the first character is
rather a stylized elephant itself, and in Japanese
one calls it "zo". Reading it together with the
character 彦 "hiko" becomes "Zohiko"
Zohiko is a lacquerware shop in Kyoto with some
350 years of tradition.
The proper name in Japanese is 京漆器象彦
With regards,
