Subject:Significance of Statue?
Posted By: Lance W Frazer Tue, Oct 24, 2017 IP: 2601:204:4001:3df5:b

This piece is unsigned (that I can find), and appears modern. I am curious about the significance of the image and its cultural background. One individual opined that it was Buddhist and represented taming the ox, but she was not sure. I would appreciate any thoughts.

Also, I'm curious about the material. The statue is small (only about 8 inches long), but weighs 4.5 pounds. The material is not terribly hard, as it scratches with metal and as can be seen in the photos, suffers wear damage. It's harder than soapstone, but I know that's not saying much. I realize it's probably not identifiable just from a picture, but any thoughts as to possibilities? Any thoughts welcome.

I suggest the material is cast resin. Look at the base and you will probably see grinding scratches where they finished the cast off, and tiny pin holes . Typical of a large number of ornaments made in this material.

The boy and the buffalo often relate to a Zen Buddhist teaching. Google search provided this link.

Thanks for the help. And you're right, it is resin.
