Thank you for the replies. I did a little research on Maruyama Okyo and I am wanting to know if this artwork is something of value and should be appraised/authenticated? If so, does anyone have any recommendations on trusted resources for appraising this type of work?

Thank you.

The inscription contains a cyclical date of "Done in early winter of 1783 during Japan's Tenmei period" (Tenmei reign was 1781-89). Our Japanese experts should be able to help with information and transliterations additional to what's provided below. The characters appear to be as follows:

First stack - 天明甲辰初冬寫

Second stack: - 應舉 (Variant Japanese characters in use nowadays are 応挙)

The second stack forms the name "Okyo", which may be Maruyama Okyo, indicated by Wikipedia.org to have been active in the late 18th century. The link to further info on that page is downloaded below.

Best regards,

Bill H.
