Subject:Starburst Pattern Dish - Age and mark?
Posted By: JLim Tue, Nov 14, 2017 IP: 101.164.192.17

Dear all

The last object I got at a recent auction was the below pictured plate, diameter 21.8cm. It is undamaged apart from a hairline crack at the rim. It cost me about 80 Australian dollars.

I obtained this object on the guess that, because of the slightly purplish cobalt, it might possibly be Minyao ware from the era of the Emperor Xuantong (Allen's first book, p113). However, I was surprised to find a very similar object in Allen's second book (p46, fig 27.1(c)) where it is named as an export ware "starburst" pattern dish of the reign of Jiaqing. Allen then states that the dishes pictured could well be 18th century.

The footrim of the dish has a definite orange tinge to it, typical of the Jiaqing era, in particular the orange "shorelines" touching the glaze, with the general greyish glaze and biscuit also typical of that era.

My first question is: should I regard this as early 19th century export ware, or is this better classified as Minyao? Could this be 18th century?

Second, what does the shop mark on the base say? I must admit, I don't hold out much hope for a translation because even by Minyao standards this mark is very very sketchy. But could someone perhaps take a shot?

Thank you in advance for your help. More pictures to follow shortly.

Kind regards
J.Lim
