Subject:Small Pottery lobe shaped/octagonal dish
Posted By: SHIRLEY Giggacher Tue, Nov 14, 2017 IP: 151.26.168.69

HI all apologies in advance for my complete lack of knowledge but I am only new to collecting Asian Pottery and Porcelain and am still learning as I go along. OK I found this lovely Lotus shaped plate/dish in a market next to a Shinto Shrine in West Tokyo when I was there in September this year. The man who sold it to me said it was very old and still had the marks from where it was cut off the kiln. He spoke reasonable English so I was sure I heard him correctly.
It is 15cms in diameter and around 2 cms in depth.
Can anyone else tell me anything more about this piece. Thank you

Shirley, I believe your dish with eight lobes is Mingei style from maybe Mashiko Japan and maybe Meiji era. I am not an expert so my opinion should be taken as a possibility. I really like it, you have a good eye. I have, what I think is a wa-nari shaped Mingei blue and white piece but I’m not 100%, I found it in my cabinet and can’t remember where and when we got it. Thanks for sharing your dish. Maybe someone with more experience on Japanese could clarify for you

Hello Endre thank you once again for taking the time to reply to my post. As far as I know the dish is actually Chinese. It was sold in Japan by a Chinese Antique dealer. He says it is made in the style of the Sancai Glaze pottery and that this style was very popular in the Tang Dynasty. Here is a link to some Tang Dynasty Sancai Glazed objects https://www.google.it/search?q=samples+of+Tang+dynasty+Sancai+Glazed+plates&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwj6ibeNm8XXAhXBLVAKHR3VBaUQ7AkIOQ&biw=1150&bih=529&dpr=1.65
