Subject:Silk painting translation requested
Posted By: Maxxxxy Wed, Nov 15, 2017 IP: 2601:381:4202:8007:e

I believe that this painting is a historical depiction of a harbor on Okinawa, but not sure, and I don't have any information on the artist.

Any help in translation of the inscription as well as the miscellaneous flags and banners would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance for your help.

supposedly painted by Yamada Shinzan in 1950, in okinawa as a gift to someone, but in all likelihood rather a copy of this picture on the cover of a commemorative book: https://wing-auctions.c.yimg.jp/sim?furl=auctions.c.yimg.jp/images.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/image/dr000/auc0211/users/4/6/6/7/qnew_mo-img600x450-1479119999ydfxwc10558.jpg&dc=1&sr.fs=20000

Wow! Thanks so much to you and to I. Nagy. What a great resource you both are, and so helpful. I could never have found that catalog info.

As it turns out, this painting was brought back to the US in the 1950's by a US serviceman, I bought it for practically nothing from his surviving nephew. I have always figured that it was painted for the military tourist trade.

Thanks again!

Reading and translation of inscription:

古琉球那覇港の賑ひ Bustle of Naha Port in Old Okinawa
一千九百五十年初秋日 1950、First day of autumn
於沖縄普天満画舎 In Futenma Painting House
山田真山 Yamada Shinzan (Name of painter)
Seal reads: 真山 Shinzan

Yamada Shinzan (1885-1977) sculptor and painter from
Okinawa.

I.Nagy
