Subject:Help with Japanese Painting
Posted By: GoodOmens Sat, Dec 02, 2017 IP: 108.51.41.35

Hi!

I was recently gifted this lovely painting and would like some help identifying it.

At the very least - can someone direct me to the artist? I've taken some photos. Let me know if I need to take anything closer. It appears to be at least hand painted.

Thanks!!

I think the picture is Chinese.
My readings:
Starting (Leisure) seal:
悪八邪 Eight Evils (Buddhist terminology)
Text:
雪嶽窮恭 Snowy mountains exhaust all respect
丙寅夏月下澣 Year of Fire-Tiger (..1866,1926,1986)
In the Last Ten Days of Summer Month
碧山畫 Picture of Bishan - Green Mountains -(Signature) Art-name
First seal reads,
碧山 Bishan
Unfortunately, the second seal is too dim, I can`t decipher it. Probably the real name of artist.
On the net I have found a certain Xu Bishan (許碧
山)1850-1912, and in a name dictionary an another painter from the later Qing era
using the Bishan art-name (real name: Xu Zouqing (許佐清)However, your picture looks younger to be painted by the two above mentioned artists.

With regards,
I.Nagy

Thanks for the insight!

I'll see if I can get a better picture of the artist seal, unfortunately it's pretty dim in person too.

Do you think something like this would be worth having professionally looked at?

It appears to be dated 1986, and the artist's name appears to be BiShan 碧山. I suggest this is more likely to be Chinese than Japanese.

The name seal has been carved incorrectly, reading left to right instead of the conventional seal practice of right to left.
