Characters read,
長色 Flourishing (strong) colors
Probably an instruction to the painter
I hope somebody will comment on the dish itself.

With regards,
I.Nagy

Thanks Nagy.

I believe your foliated dish is Japanese and probably dates from the late Meiji to Taisho period, or about 1900-1925. I think it may be Kutani ware, based on observation of a similar palette and style of floral painting on signed Kutani products from the cited period; see photos uploaded below. In addition to Kutani, I've also seen the palette and floral painting style on some Satsuma-style stoneware dishes signed by the Kinkozan studio of Kyoto.

Your dishes probably are related to the oyster serving dish shown in my photos in that they're probably also made for restaurant or home table use.

Best regards,

Bill H.

Thanks Bill H,
After your comments I have been able to find very similar dishes mentioning them as Kutani Hand Painted Oyster Dish or Kutani hand painted Oyster Shooter Dish.
But then how does the mark translated as flourishing colors relate to this piece any suggestion.
Regards,
Allen.

I don't have a clue what the red mark signifies, unless it's a pattern name. If you look hard, there was other writing on the back that someone obliterated. The post-World War II anti-Japanese sentiment inspired some people to rub the markings off their Japanese porcelains. No way to tell if that is the case here.

Best regards,

Bill H.
