The lacquered komono-ire (small storage chest) is Japanese and was made in or after 1897.
The newest (imitation) decorative gold coin (Right top) on the inlaid surface has been issued in the 30th Year of Meiji (1897). The inscription on the second newest coin (With latinic "Shizuoka" inscription) according to the marking is from the 15the Year of Meiji (1882). The
rest of (imitation) cold coins are from the Edo period.

With regards,
I.Nagy

Thank you! So I’m not sure I fully understand, the coins are just imitation?

Dear Mic,

The Japanese coins(including the modern ones) never have had latinic inscriptions on them.
For reference pls.see "japanese 5 yen gold coin 1897"
on Google.

Thank you so much for the information. I understand now. I am still confused about the age. So if the coins are imitation, does that make this a recent piece? If you don’t mind, what kind of value would you think this has? I was researching and found nothing like it with the coins embedded. Does that make it rare?

Thank you
