Subject:Porcelain Statue
Posted By: BL Sat, Dec 23, 2017 IP: 69.86.17.79

I recently bought this statue at an auction. It is 18" high, 4" wide, and 31/2" deep. It seems to be decorative and I'm not sure the photo of the mark on the bottom has the right orientation. If anybody can give me any information about it I would appreciate it. Thanks.

Not much help but I can tell you it appears to be Mongolian or at least of a Mongolian man. The dragons appear to be transfer decoration which was invented in England in 1760, not sure how long it took to get to Mongolia but I want to say early 1900's? Hopefully someone else can give you more info.

The labeled front of his pedestal says "Qianlong",while the base-mark reads "Made during the Tongzhi Reign of the Great Qing Dynasty". So this personage would fit into the 'Manchu" category.

I've never seen one of these images that looked exactly like this one. You can see from the base that it was a lamp base at one time, so may have been lighting up someone's life for the last 30-40 years. Probably manufactured in the 3rd quarter of the 20th century, I'd think.

Don't pick it up bare-handed until you get all of the brown muck washed off using a non-chlorine spray cleaner such as those with hydrogen peroxide bases.

Best regards,

Bill H.
