Subject:Identify Stamps?
Posted By: Allison Wed, Dec 27, 2017 IP: 63.193.207.1

Might anyone be able to tell me what these stamps say? And, where might I find information on artist stamps (signatures) for Chinese ink paintings? Thank you!

The seals belonged to the famous Chinese painter
Qi Baishi (齊白石)1864-1957.
1st picture,
白石門下 Tutorship of Baishi
2nd picture (Left)
頁石 Stone leaf
(Right)
頴川 Yingchuan
(Yingchuan was the first capital of China in the legendary Xia dynasty (XXi-XVi c. BC)
Qi Baishi used to have about 300 different seals,
which is a record among Chinese painters.
In my latest Chinese seal-dictionary about 175 of
his seal-prints can be found. The last two seals are
are not among them.

With regards,
I.Nagy

Allison
The Zhejiang seal database lists 405 seals for
Qi Baishi, but I believe that there were likely
even more than that number. I could not find the
last 2 seals either. Please post a picture of the
painting, I would love to see it. The addition
of a written script above the 2 seals may be an
important identifier for works from Qi Baishi. I.Nagy is your
seal database a published work? I would love to
have access to it.

To everybody,
I just have counted the exact number of Qi Baishi seals in my dictionary; 240 seal and 20 signature versions.
Here are the data on the dictionary,
題名:二十世紀中国書画家印款辞典 (上下2巻)
著者:児文東
出版:西安世界圖書公司 2008年
Price: cca.RMB 500
Inside China you can buy it in big book stores, or
on the 孔夫子旧書網 (accepts orders only from inside China)
(The two volumes weighs over 10 pounds)
As of the seal
白石門下 Pupil, disciple, follower, tutorship
of Baishi
I also cannot give a clear answer to the question
whether it was painted by a disciple or by the master.
Among his seal there is one with the reading,
白石妻 Wife of Baishi
The 2nd and 3rd seals (not included in the dictionary) are identical to others in style and are
containing of character 頁 or its variation 穎.
(other examples; 白石見、白石題跋)

Of course I would be glad to see the whole picture with the signature, too.

With regards,
I.Nagy

Thank you for your reply, I.Nagy. I am grateful for the information. From your comment, would it be correct to assume that this scroll was made by a student or follower of Qi Baishi?

Also, is it possible to purchase a hard copy or view your Chinese seal dictionary online?

Thank you again,
Allison

Likely by someone who liked and painted in Qi's style but was not his student or employee. There are thousands of such individuals in China.

@ I.Nagy,

I am not the original poster.

I would like to know how you know the last 2 are also Qi Baishi ? As you said these 2 seals are not in your book. And they do not name Qi Baishi like the first one does.

You have maybe seen them before?

Thanks

Sorry I forgot to ask...

The 1st seal says "Tutorship of Baishi"

Why does it say "tutorship"? That implies to me that maybe it was painted by one of his students?
