Subject:Song Lian inscription
Posted By: John R Wed, Dec 20, 2017 IP: 2601:443:c102:2a10:1

First of all thank you I.Nagy for your brilliant
help. Translating the wide varieties of the Chinese
written word takes a special mind and affection for
the language. I am posting another inscription
on a painting. In this case it is from Song Lian,
the Yuan/Ming Dynasty historian. The inscription
was added to a painting attributed to Liu Cai
the renowned fish painter.
Once again thank you for any assistance.

Inscription reads,
眼似真珠鱗似金
時々動浪出環沉
河中浮上龍門去
不嘆江湖歳月深
宋濂題

Eyes look like pearls, scales look like gold
The waves are moving from time to time, while floating, while sinking
Rises to the surface at Longmen (Mytical Dragon Gate
where a carp transforms into a dragon) without sigh
Rivers, lakes and times are (immeasurably) deep
Song Lian Inscription

With regards,
I.Nagy

Thanks rat,
I figured that you would find the Miao Fu version.
I've used it in my research as you will see by the
enclosed images. While the images appear almost
identical, there are some interesting differences.
If the measurements of the Miao Fu are correct it
is a very large silk painting. 171 x 99 cm is 67 x 39 inches.
The Liu Cai attributed version on paper is 132 x 66 cm 26 x 52 inches.
There are differences in the treatment of the
carp's scales in shading and description.
Missing on the Miao version are some wonderful
minnows. I.Nagy's translation of the Song Lian
poem matches his personality and philosophy.

Nice! I love your juxtaposition of the photos, you are great about doing this well. I lack the sophistication for it.

The scales on your carp certainly seem more naturalistic, but the two versions generally seem quite close.

Is that a Shiqu Baoji inventory seal at the bottom right of the inscription? If so have you been able to check whether the catalog includes this picture?

The positioning and spacing of the seals concerns me: rather than group them along the edges of the work and in corners, as was common for old paintings, they are spaced out and away from the picture's edges, a practice I have seen on a lot of modern fakes.

Similarly, the distress of the paper seems at odds with the state of preservation of the imagery, which I have also observed in recent imitations, though it's hard to tell much specific from photos of photos.
