Subject:Chinese Bronze Vase Mark
Posted By: Allasan Fri, Dec 29, 2017 IP: 45.37.196.248

I bought a pair of bronze vases at auction and after cleaning them up realized there's a mark--piqued my curiosity. I've spent hours trying to decipher the mark; I believe the first mark is Zhong--the rest I've not had any luck. Maybe I'm wrong about it being Chinese... Any help would be appreciated.

It does seem Chinese but I believe it's a Japanese item imitating Chinese Southern Song/Yuan ceramic forms, with added lingzhi fungus handles and the birds in relief (examples of the form I am talking about here: http://www.alaintruong.com/archives/2016/12/10/34671160.html)

The mark on the base reads 中尾吉氏, I expect the Japan experts will be able to help you further.

Thank you--not only for helping with the translation but giving me information on the vase form. Hopefully, someone can help further with the translation--a translating tool gave me: Nakao Yoshi shi

The mark is Japanese and reads,
Nakao Yoshiuji (中尾吉氏)
Several famous Japanese swordsmiths have had the same
"Yoshiuji" given (art) names. (Possibly the art-name of the artist) Nakao is a common surname in Japan.
Unfortunately, I could not find any metal artist
under this name neither on the net nor in my books.

With regards,
I.Nagy
