Subject:Butterfly 19th C. Vase

It is mounted on a late 19th century kerosene lamp and later converted to electricity. Could the vase be older than the lamp? Thanks

lovely!
Probably 19th, but you should take the lamp apart and post some clear photos of the foot.
The quality is certainly looks good enough to be Kangxi in my opinion, but I'm not sure this subject matter was ever used as early as the Kangxi.
Best,
Tim

I don't believe the butterfly motif appeared until the Qianlong Reign, and even then it was rare. It was used again in the Guangxu Reign, Republic, and late 20th Century.

It is hard to say without seeing the base, but the colors are wrong for Qianlong and look more late 19th Century in my opinion, but could also be more modern.

A quick search with google images reveals an example of a Kangxi period vase decorated with butterflies from Sotheby's:

And a 19/20th century example:

Also came across this famille verté/wucai Kangxi period vase, which is in the National Palace Museum. I find it interesting how the enamels resembles those of the vase at the bidsquare site. Makes me wonder if that one is actually a mark and period example rather than a 19/20th century copy. More detailed photos available here:

It's definitely a possibility that Williams vase is also Kangxi period. I would be interesting for us to see the base and perhaps some close up pictures that shows the details of the butterflys, and also a better reproduction of the colors would be welcome.
