Subject:Thai metal offering bowl/stand
Posted By: Paul Tue, Jan 09, 2018 IP: 118.208.179.216

Would be interested in any info on this Thai offering bowl/stand I think maybe 19th cent. judging by the amount of oxidation. Guessing it is made from some type of alloy containing copper. Any help appreciated....

Hello. I'm not great on asian objects but if this came in to me the first thing I would say is that the patination looks wrong or forced. That would set my alarm bells ringing. The general look and quality of the piece is shabby but perhaps they were like that. I would expect an offering bowel to have more finesse in the working. So I would ask where you got it from and then where did the previous owner get it from. If its been in the family for years then I'm eating my words but if its a recent online purchase be careful. Hope I could help a little

Thanks for your input really appreciate it...My brother In Law "who is Thai" bought it on my behalf recently in his local market. Due to the recent floods in BKK many people are selling bits and pieces to raise cash. He only paid 200 baht/$8 Aud. I agree it looks shabby but if it was used In conjuction with a spirit house"san phra phum" by a farmer or low income person then that would be quite feasible.
