Subject:Chinese Jar

How can you tell me about the age of this fairly newer mark. What does it read> the work does not seem to be very neat. Thanks

The gotheborg.com website has an example of Chinese porcelain bearing the same base-mark with an assigned dating of third quarter, 20th century. Based on information submitted in 2014 by a Hong Kong contributor to a sina.com blog (Link), as well as study of a piece pictured below from my own collection, I believe your vase may fall into a category of older mid-to-late 20th century transfer-decorated porcelain that also sometimes is found with the mark of Zhong Guo Guang Cai (中国廣彩) and associated English "MADE IN CHINA".

Citing the "Zhongguo Guangcai" mark, the Chinese blogger associated this type of porcelain with kilns around Guangzhou (Canton) Municipality, and said such wares were admired for their use of "Woven Gold 'Kwon' (Guan?) glaze".

My opinion that your vase is related rests much with the tones of its gilding and bright enamel colors. I estimate my vase was produced at a time when any elaborate gilding was too pricy for the post-war market, so it was replaced mostly by a brilliant orange iron red. But in any event, I believe your vase was produced in the same mid-century or slightly later period.

Best regards,

Bill H.
