Subject:need ID of Chinese painting of "royal" bear escaping cage
Posted By: Wayne J. Wed, Jan 10, 2018 IP: 2601:449:8301:afb9:9 I will start with pics of the scroll label, "title", and side inscription. I am new to this site, but will try to add pics of the seals and painting. If I'm understanding the posting instructions, I can only do that after this first message is posted. (I have examined the painting under 8X and it appears older and not a print.) Thanks in advance! -Wayne |

Posted By: rat Sun, Jan 14, 2018 "両客作此" "two painters painted this" is not possible: the base of the second character is clearly 心, so 客 is incorrect. |
Subject:pics of stamps and Chinese "royal bear" painting
Posted By: Wayne J. Thu, Jan 11, 2018 Here's pics to go with my post yesterday. I apologize that yesterday's pics were fuzzy, and I can post new ones if needed. I can also post closeups of the painting itself, as the one today is not very good. Thanks again. -Wayne |

Posted By: Wayne J. Sat, Jan 13, 2018 Hello Mr. or Ms. Nagy, Thank you so much for your translations. The other replier doubted this was an original by Jiao Bingzhen. You translated that it was painted by two painters. However unlikely, could it have been Bingzhen and one of his students? If not, what would be your guess about the age and value of the painting, and the relevance of the collector stamps? Do you think I should have it appraised? Thanks again for any information. |

Posted By: rat Thu, Jan 11, 2018 This picture claims to be by Qing court artist Jiao Bingzhen, which it almost certainly is not, accompanied by a frontispiece dated 1744 (ditto). The title is simply "People" or "(Human) Figures", nothing about a bear. There are almost no classical Chinese paintings of bears. The one that comes to mind is within a section of one of the earliest surviving Chinese paintings and in the British Museum (https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/a/ad/Admonitions_Scroll_Scene_4.jpg/702px-Admonitions_Scroll_Scene_4.jpg); a Song dynasty copy of this painting is in the Palace Museum Beijing (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Admonitions_Scroll#/media/File:Admonitions_Scroll_Scene_4_(Song_copy).jpg). Unless Jiao made a copy of that scene at some point there would be no confusing it with a picture by him. |
